In this episode of Small Business Stories, hosted by the Monroe Chamber of Commerce and Louisiana Catalyst, Melissa Mitcham of Heard, McElroy & Vestal (HMV) discusses how community involvement and small business success go hand in hand.

A Legacy of Local Leadership

Founded in 1946, HMV is one of the longest-standing accounting firms in the region. With offices in Monroe, Shreveport, and Longview, HMV employs over 160 professionals and serves clients in at least eight states. “Our core values—integrity, commitment, our people, and teamwork—have remained unchanged since our founding,” Mitcham shared.

Giving Back Through Service

HMV’s culture of service is a major factor in both client loyalty and employee retention. Each year, they organize a “Day of Giving,” allowing employees to volunteer with nonprofits across the region. Mitcham emphasized how working side-by-side in the community strengthens internal bonds between tax and audit teams.

“If we elevate our people and our community, we all benefit—directly or indirectly,” she said.

Empowering Small Businesses

As a Monroe Chamber member, HMV acts as more than an accounting firm. “We aim to be a resource,” said Mitcham. Whether it’s helping a small business evaluate their valuation, plan a succession strategy, or optimize for tax efficiency, HMV provides services that directly support local entrepreneurs.

Expanding Services for Evolving Needs

To better serve the market, HMV has expanded beyond traditional accounting services:

  • HMV Wealth Advisors – Focused on tax-smart financial planning and generational wealth.
  • Align LLC – A mineral management division offering royalty management and contract review.
  • Retirement Plan Services – Consulting for employers to build competitive benefit plans.

These added services allow HMV to provide high-level expertise without clients needing to leave their trusted firm.

Creating a Culture People Stay For

When asked how HMV retains so many young professionals, Mitcham pointed to culture. “They want to feel engaged and connected,” she said. The company provides game rooms, flexible schedules, quarterly feedback sessions, and even hallway cornhole matches—all of which foster camaraderie and work-life balance.

“Our open-door policy means anyone at any level can speak with leadership,” Mitcham said. “That communication is key.”

National Resources with Local Heart

As a member of the RSM US Alliance, HMV has access to national-scale accounting expertise while maintaining its independent, community-focused service model. “Our clients don’t outgrow us,” Mitcham noted. “Whether it’s sales tax in multiple states or buying property in Puerto Rico—we know who to call.”

Final Thoughts

Melissa Mitcham and the HMV team believe that community involvement and small business growth go hand in hand. Through volunteerism, relationship-building, and resource sharing, HMV continues to help Monroe and surrounding communities thrive.
